Parents and Teachers
The Outlier’s Secret was initially written to engage Mrs. Magaña’s class of fifth graders in learning and applying math in new contexts. While the majority of content within The Outlier’s Secret targets the development of 5th grade Math Common Core State Standards, some 4th and 6th grade Common Core State Standards are also addressed throughout the book. Whether or not your child’s school is using Common Core State Standards, this book will support your child in practicing age-appropriate math in a challenging way.
Additionally, literary vocabulary that students should have mastered by the end of 6th grade has also been integrated into the writing of The Outlier’s Secret and reading comprehension prompts and activities are included in the resources below.

Math Standards Alignment
This resource shows how each chapter clue targets specific Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. You can use this document to identify which skills your child has mastered and/or with which skills your child needs more practice.
Reading Comprehension Prompts
This resource contains reading comprehension questions and prompts for students to reflect on throughout the reading process. Reading comprehension questions are aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Reading.
